From National Need to Global Vision
Half a century ago, ASELSAN emerged from Türkiye’s determination to strengthen its national defence capabilities. Established in 1975 to meet the communication needs of the Turkish Armed Forces, the company began with a clear mission: to reduce foreign dependence and build a domestic technological foundation. Today, as ASELSAN celebrates its 50th anniversary, it stands as one of the world’s leading defence electronics companies, an institution shaped by innovation, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to technological sovereignty.
Building the Foundation of Türkiye’s Defence Industry
The completion of ASELSAN’s first manufacturing facility in Macunköy in 1978 marked the start of a period of rapid expansion. By 1980, ASELSAN delivered its first manpack and tank radios, quickly followed by handheld radios and early alarm systems in 1981.
The mid-1980s saw ASELSAN step into more sophisticated domains, developing electronic warfare and data terminal systems that enhanced the operational strength of the Turkish Armed Forces. In 1987, participation in a multinational NATO programme for Stinger missile production signaled ASELSAN’s growing capability and its integration into advanced international defence projects. These early achievements laid the groundwork for ASELSAN’s transformation into a long-term strategic asset for Türkiye.
Expanding Horizons: Technologies from Sea to Space
Over five decades, ASELSAN has evolved into a global technology company offering advanced solutions across every major defence domain. Its portfolio now extends from underwater systems to outer space technologies, covering air defence and radar systems, electronic warfare, electro-optics, avionics, guidance and control, land and weapon systems, naval platforms, satellite technologies, secure communication networks, and command-and-control systems.
This expansion has not been confined to defence alone. ASELSAN today makes significant contributions to civilian industries, including transportation, energy, urban security, and health technologies. This dual-sector strength has reinforced the company’s role as both a technological engine and a national industrial pillar.
A Vision Rooted in Trust and Technological Independence
ASELSAN’s ascent has been guided by a clear vision: to be a reliable, globally preferred, human-focused, and environmentally conscious technology firm.
Its mission, centred on supporting the Turkish Armed Forces, emphasises the development of high-value, innovative, and dependable electronic solutions while contributing to Türkiye’s technological independence. This mission, strengthened by consistent investment in research, engineering talent, and industry partnerships, has made ASELSAN synonymous with trust and reliability both at home and abroad.
Marking a Milestone: Achievements in 2023–2024
ASELSAN’s golden jubilee coincides with one of the most dynamic periods in its history. In 2023 and 2024, the company advanced several key defence technologies, expanded its global footprint, and achieved record-breaking corporate milestones. During this period, ASELSAN rose to 42nd place in the Defense News Top 100 list of the world’s largest defence companies, reflecting its growing international prominence.
Rising in Global Rankings and Market Influence
Financially and structurally, ASELSAN reached new heights. In 2024, it climbed to sixth place in Borsa Istanbul’s market capitalization ranking and achieved a historic Corporate Governance Rating Score of 9.49. Its international expansion strategy took significant steps forward, with the completion of new organisational structures in six countries and the opening of additional offices worldwide. These developments reinforced ASELSAN’s commitment to being closer to its global user base while enhancing export capacity and customer support.
Breakthrough Developments Strengthening Defence Capability
Technological innovation remained at the heart of ASELSAN’s progress. The company began mass production of the SİPER Air Defence System and successfully conducted the first firing test of the SİPER Product-2 variant. During the same period, ASELSAN unveiled ASELFLIR-500, recognised as one of the most advanced electro-optical targeting systems in the world.
The MURAD AESA radar, developed entirely in Türkiye, was integrated into both the AKINCI UAV and jet aircraft, marking a major milestone in national radar technology. Significant progress was also made in microelectronics, as ASELSAN advanced to the system integration stage of its domestically designed GaN transistors. In the maritime domain, the KARETTA anti-jam system was installed on the national drillship Abdülhamid Han, showcasing ASELSAN’s growing impact beyond traditional defence platforms.
A Growing Global Footprint
Exports remained a core component of ASELSAN’s strategy. In 2023, the company expanded into four new countries, bringing the total number of export destinations to 85. New regional offices in Poland, Chile, the UAE, and North Macedonia strengthened ASELSAN’s global reach. At home, the company secured strong positions in major industrial indices and was recognised repeatedly for excellence in innovation, corporate governance, and human resources.
Powering the Future Through R&D and Human Capital
ASELSAN’s success rests on one of Türkiye’s largest engineering ecosystems, and a new generation of talent continues to fuel its progress. The “Next Big Move to Türkiye” programme drew four times more applications than the previous year, reflecting ASELSAN’s growing appeal among global engineering professionals.
The company’s increasing investment, exceeding 400 million dollars in new R&D and production capacity, signals a future defined by advanced research in artificial intelligence, autonomy, sensors, secure communications, and next-generation air and space technologies.
Looking Ahead: The Next 50 Years of Innovation
As ASELSAN celebrates its 50th year, it reflects not only on a remarkable past but also on an ambitious future. The principles that shaped its journey, innovation, dedication, collaboration, and trust, remain unchanged. With a strong global presence, a deep commitment to R&D, and a mission rooted in national technological independence, ASELSAN is poised to define the next era of defence and civilian technologies.
Half a century of progress has established ASELSAN as a symbol of Türkiye’s technological rise. The decades ahead promise even greater achievements as the company continues to push boundaries, develop cutting-edge solutions, and contribute to a safer and more connected world.
