Toho Air Service Expands Fleet with New AW139 Helicopter

At the Japan Aerospace exhibition held in Tokyo from October 16 to 18, Toho Air Service, Co., Ltd., Mitsui Bussan Aerospace, Co., Ltd., and Leonardo signed a contract for an additional AW139 intermediate twin-engine helicopter for Tokyo-Ai land shuttle services. The delivery of the new aircraft is anticipated in 2025.

Toho Air, based in Tokyo and boasting over 60 years of experience, operates a commuter helicopter service that connects the six major Izu islands. The new AW139 will enhance Toho Air’s offerings with improved navigation capabilities, expanded cabin space, greater comfort, heightened safety standards, and a more sustainable maintenance approach.

The contract signing marks a milestone as Leonardo and Mitsui Bussan Aerospace celebrate 20 years of successful collaboration in the Japanese helicopter market. This partnership began with the introduction of the AW139 in Japan, which quickly became one of the country’s most popular helicopter models and an iconic bestseller worldwide.

With over 1,400 units on order and more than 1,200 aircraft already in service, the AW139 has logged over 4 million flight hours with more than 300 operators in over 90 countries. The helicopter has proven its versatility across various roles in Japan, including passenger transport, law enforcement, search and rescue, medevac, disaster relief, firefighting, and electronic newsgathering.
