Navika Sagar Parikrama II: Indian Navy’s Historic All-Women Global Voyage

In a bold demonstration of its dedication to maritime heritage and seamanship, the Indian Navy is spearheading a new chapter in ocean sailing. The Navy has revitalized its sailing tradition through the pioneering efforts of Sail Training Ships INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini, as well as circumnavigation missions aboard INSV Mhadei and INSV Tarini.

Continuing this legacy of exploration and adventure, the Indian Navy is set to embark on a historic global circumnavigation expedition. Two Indian Navy women officers, Lt. Cdr. Roopa A and Lt. Cdr. Dilna K, will soon set sail on this extraordinary journey aboard INSV Tarini. Their expedition, known as Navika Sagar Parikrama II, marks a significant milestone in the Navy’s ocean sailing endeavors.

The officers have spent the past three years meticulously preparing for this demanding voyage. Their previous accomplishments include participating in a trans-oceanic expedition from Goa to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Town and back last year, as well as completing a double-handed sailing journey from Goa to Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair) and another from Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius earlier this year.

The Navika Sagar Parikrama II voyage will be an arduous test of their skills, physical endurance, and mental fortitude. The officers have trained intensively, accumulating thousands of miles of sailing experience under the guidance of Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd.), a celebrated circumnavigator and Golden Globe Race hero.

This expedition not only highlights India’s advancements in maritime exploration but also emphasizes gender equality in high-seas ventures. The Indian Navy has proudly unveiled the official logo for the Navika Sagar Parikrama II. The logo features an octagonal shape representing the Indian Navy, with a sun symbolizing the celestial body and a compass guiding the sailors through treacherous waters. The sailboat navigating the vast ocean epitomizes the spirit of adventure and resilience that defines this voyage.
