Virgin Australia has finalized an order with Embraer for eight E190-E2 narrowbody aircraft, which will be integrated into its fleet renewal strategy. The E190-E2, renowned for being the world’s most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft with the lowest noise emissions, will enhance Virgin Australia’s existing fleet by replacing its aging Fokker aircraft. This addition will be reflected in Embraer’s Q3 backlog, with deliveries set to commence in the second half of 2025.
The announcement will be attended by the Hon. Rita Saffioti, Deputy Premier of Western Australia and Treasurer, Minister for Transport, and Minister for Tourism. The new E190-E2 fleet will be stationed in Perth and operated by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA). Equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW1900G engines, the aircraft boasts a range of approximately six hours.
Jayne Hrdlicka, Virgin Australia Group CEO, remarked, “When the new E190-E2 enters service from October 2025, it will become the first new aircraft in the WA charter market this century. The E190-E2 is the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its segment and will reduce emissions by about 30 percent compared to the outgoing F100. These aircraft also feature significantly lower noise profiles and enhanced passenger comfort.”
She added, “When the E190-E2 joins the fleet from late next year, it will predominantly operate charter flights for VARA, strengthening its position as a leading operator in the WA charter market.”

The E190-E2 builds upon the legacy of the first-generation E-Jets with its advanced aerodynamics, innovative wing design, and new technologies that enhance fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Certified to operate with blends of up to 50% SAF, the E190-E2 has also demonstrated engine compatibility with 100% SAF during test flights.
Embraer remains committed to supporting the aviation industry’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The company aims to be carbon neutral by 2040, achieve carbon neutral growth from 2022, implement 25% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use by 2040, and rely on 100% renewable energy sources by 2030.
Since the introduction of the Bandeirante to Australia in 1978, Embraer has established a strong presence in the region, with nearly 50 aircraft currently in operation, marking one of the largest E-Jets fleets in Asia-Pacific.
