Founded in 1970, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has established itself as a leader in missile and ammunition manufacturing. BDL’s prominence is highlighted by its role in the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), which led to the development of iconic missile systems such as Prithvi and Agni. By remaining true to its core values while embracing change, BDL is poised to shape the future of India’s defence manufacturing. “Poised to expand its global footprint, BDL aims to capitalize on its reputation for reliability and excellence. By forging strategic alliances and venturing into new territories, BDL seeks to position itself as a global leader in the defence industry,” said Cmde A Madhavarao (Retd), CMD, BDL.

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a premier Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, was established in 1970 in Hyderabad, India, with the initial mission to manufacture Anti-Tank Guided Missiles for the Indian Army. In its early years, BDL collaborated with foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to supply various missiles and allied equipment for the Indian Armed Forces.
The Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, launched by the Government of India in the 1980s, created vast opportunities for BDL. Identified as the Prime Production Agency, BDL worked closely with DRDO to assimilate advanced manufacturing and program management technologies. This transition allowed BDL to evolve from a missile manufacturer to a comprehensive Weapon System Integrator, providing complete solutions for the Indian Armed Forces.

Today, BDL is a multi-product, multi-location enterprise catering to the needs of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. BDL offers a range of products, including Surface-to-Air Missiles, Air-to-Air Missiles, Air-to-Surface Weapons, Launchers, Test Equipment, Underwater Weapons, Counter Measure Systems, and Anti-Tank Guided Missiles. The company also provides Product Life Cycle Support and refurbishment services for vintage missiles and is increasingly focusing on AI-based products by harnessing future-generation technologies.
With over five decades of manufacturing experience, BDL has entered the international market, offering products like the Akash Weapon System (Surface-to-Air Missile), Astra Weapon System (Air-to-Air Missile), Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, Helina (Air-to-Surface Weapon), Light and Heavy Weight Torpedoes, Counter Measures Dispensing Systems, and Anti-Tank Guided Missiles like Nag, Konkurs-M, and Milan-2T. BDL has already exported Light Weight Torpedoes and is receiving interest from several countries for other products.

BDL operates manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad, Bhanur, Ibrahimpatnam (all in Telangana), and Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). To meet the growing demands of the Indian Armed Forces and friendly foreign nations, BDL is setting up two new units in Amravati (Maharashtra) and Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh).
As part of its initiatives towards self-reliance in the defence sector, BDL has set up a warhead manufacturing facility at its Bhanur Unit for current and future missile needs. BDL has also established an integrated Radio Frequency (RF) Seeker Facility at its Kanchanbagh Unit for the production and testing of RF seekers, a critical and technology-intensive subsystem for target tracking in future missiles.
This indigenous capability is a significant step towards ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) and has positioned BDL among a select few global companies with this expertise. Recently, BDL handed over the first RF Seeker of the Akash – Next Generation Weapon System to DRDO.
BDL has developed a strong in-house R&D Division focused on Design & Engineering activities, resulting in significant achievements in indigenization and value-added products. Efforts of in-house R & D Division have resulted into products like the Fagot Launcher Adapted for Milan Equipment (FLAME), Konkurs Missile Test Equipment, Konkurs Launcher Test Equipment, Counter Measure Dispensing System, Amogha (the third-generation ATGM), and AI-enabled Counter Measure Dispensing System.
In response to modern-age warfare, BDL is leveraging emerging technologies to develop advanced weapons for the armed forces. Recently, BDL signed a MoU with T-Hub to exploit indigenous deep tech capability towards making futuristic weapon systems.

Emphasis is placed on automating manufacturing facilities, indigenizing critical items, and equipping human resources with advanced skills to effectively harness emerging technologies.
BDL is committed to indigenization to achieve self-reliance in manufacturing and offer competitively priced products. The company has successfully indigenized several items in foreign collaboration programs, achieving an average indigenization percentage between 80 to 90 percent. The Government of India’s policy of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ has opened opportunities for BDL to explore tie-ups with foreign OEMs for ToT.
With a robust order book, anticipated orders, a wide product range, skilled manpower, state-of-the-art facilities, a focus on self-reliance, and export initiatives, BDL is well-positioned for steady growth powered by a strategic fusion of optimization, innovation, and global expansion. With an eye on leveraging its existing strengths while venturing into uncharted territories, BDL aims to redefine its stature in the defence sector, both domestically and internationally.
